Post & Beam Frames
Roofs • Houses • Porches • Extensions • Garages
Post and Beam framed structures have been around for thousands of years and the joints used in their construction have changed little in all that time. Their durability, strength and beauty are well documented even in earthquake zones like Japan. Oak is a well-known timber used for these types of structures although quality softwoods like Douglas Fir and Larch are also common.
Our interest in post & beam frame building came initially from travelling in North America where post and beam frame buildings were experiencing a renaissance. This was further enhanced while studying Civil Engineering as a mature student. The Great Hall hammer beam roof at Stirling Castle was under construction at the time which provided the opportunity for a final year thesis on Heavy post & beam framed structures with an emphasis on the Castle roof. With access to the site during construction it was possible to meet and talk first hand to the craftsmen who were working on the structure. These conversations offered a great insight into the industry within the UK, which was beginning to see a similar renaissance.
